Gourmet in Singapore
Each cuisine has a cultural and regional background.
Singaporean food represents the history and culture as well, and it is very similar to Malaysian cuisine.
That’s because Singapore is located at the top of the Malay Peninsula, and it had been a part of Malaysia before gaining independence in 1965.
There are mainly three types of food in Singapore because of ethnic groups.
As it is developing as the head quarter of South East Asia nowadays, people are gathering from various regions all over the world.
There are also many kinds of restaurants and cuisine: European, American, Middle Eastern, Japanese, etc.
This article introduces representative Singaporean food: Chinese, Malay, and Indian.
The Chinese Singaporean cuisine has two types, one is Fujian, and the other is Cantonese.
Fujian noodles are popular among the local people, and it is made of stir-fried noodles with vegetables and meat.
Chili Crab is another dish representative of Singaporean cuisine, but it is not so common, and is mainly for tourists.
Bak kut teh is pork soup stewed with many kinds of medicinal herbs and spices.
Malay cuisine doesn’t use pork because Malay people are basically Muslims.
Representative Malay dishes are Satay, Char kway teow or Nasi goreng and so on.
Satay is skewered meat with peanut sauce, Char kway teow is fried noodles with wet texture like Japanese Udon, and Nasi goreng is fried rice.
It is called Nyonya Cuisine, which is mixed with Chinese and Malay food.
For example, Laksa noodle is a typical Nyonya Cuisine, with boiled Fujian noodles with coconut milk soup with prawn and spices.
Indian Singaporean food is basically the curry from south India.
Fish head curry is popular not only among Indian residents but also for other people including tourists.
I recommend you to go to the food courts or Hawker centers when you visit Singapore.
Especially Hawker centers are unique cultural facilities in Singapore, which are set up by the Government as more sanitary dining places than outdoor street venders.
You can enjoy various kinds of food at reasonable prices.
